Taming those Wild Things

It's Teacher Week 2013!

Today is Classroom Management Thursday!

I've used various methods throughout my years, and seen even more (I subbed for a year-was that an eye-opener!), and I've discovered...

It always depends on the class.

Last year I was uber lucky and did not have to really manage their behavior...they were amazing! However, the year before that, I had some issues (darn girl drama!) and I know I'll have some 'challenges' this upcoming year.

The year before last and this upcoming year, I have/will be using a clip chart:

Redone this year to match my sea theme!
I like this because I can focus on mostly positive behavior-and the kids can move up and down throughout the day...it gives them a lot of chances.

I also have some coming in with pre-set behavior plans...but I haven't been informed yet as to what they are.

The one thing that has stayed consistent throughout all my years is how I set up the expectations and the rules.

First, we start talking about what we each want to accomplish this school year-our Hopes and Dreams.

This is individualized to each student-they set what they want to learn/do (a little like goal setting-but I don't expect them to meet it...i.e One friend last year wanted to go on a nature walk and discover dinosaur bones....sorry kid but that will probably not happen!)

After we have written down/drawn out our Hopes and Dreams (we do them on clouds!), we sit down and talk about what kind of rules they'll need to help them accomplish their Hopes and Dreams.

They tell me what rules they thing they need and I'll write them allllllllllllll down

After I write them down (colors not specific!), we will sort them into three categories (Somehow, they always fit into one of the three...amazing, right?! ;)
Me, Others and Supplies/School.

We then come up with a positively stated rule that covers everything in that category.

And add one more for fun...to keep me happy and have fun learning! (That way, if they do something that they say doesn't fit into one of the categories, I can always ask if they made me happy. :)

We also talk a lot about making good choices-and how Miss M will still like you, but may not like the choice you are making-and how to change your choice. Lots of role-playing and modeling!!

Before and After

I've spent a good chunk of time these past few days in my classroom...I thought I would show you some before's and after's!

Before:

 Oh so messy and disorganized!!

2 days and 6 1/2 hours, some bruises and a sore back/arms later...
Math Section-Science on top

Literacy Section
Social Studies  Section-Science on top

Doesn't it look gorgeous! I still have plenty of space to add things (especially once I get my piloting materials!) and it looks so clean (it better be, I used up almost a whole container of disinfecting cleaning wipes!) and everything is so much more accessible!

Before:
Closet Space
ummmmm...I have no words-although I will say it was mostly left like this when I came in last year

3 hours, a trash bag and a haul (or 2) to the free pile later...
I can't put a lot (really anything) due to the sprinkler in the closet and fire regs- lost space :(
Look at it! It is so pretty...and color coded :) Be still my heart!

I can see everything, and know how much of everything I have...something I had no idea of before! This will make ordering a whole lot easier next year (fingers crossed that I'll still be there!), and I'll have a good idea of how much I used so I don't over order.

My classroom is almost done...probably one more day next week (after the math materials arrive so I can put them away.) It's starting to come together!

Organizing for Instruction

It's Teacher Week 2013!

Today is Organizing Instruction Wednesday!

Peeps,if you didn't know this before, you'll know this now.

My name is Kaitlyn and I have a binder problem.

Everything goes into a binder. My binders have binders (ok, not really...but you get the point ;)

Each major subject has it's own color.

Blue is Science
Navy is Math
Purple is Writing (Seasonal, Traits, and Poetry)
Pink/Light Purple is Social Studies
Teal is Literacy Series

And they all have the same dividers in them (for those that need dividers)

My Social Studies Tabs

Either the Avery 5-Tab with Pockets or the 8-Tab with Pockets.

And everything is page protected...(I have a ton of these-usually buy the 200 pack!!)

Some subjects have more than one....
These are my Math Center Binders-separated by domain. It has the hard copies and recording/answer sheets of all the centers I have printed out. Plus, I have the Math WS Binder above!
-Writing has a lot too!

Since I accumulated a lot of stuff from wonderful TPT sellers and freebies (I'm like a ninja-I grab those flash freebies quick! :) (THANK YOU!!), I recently started adding in specialized binders with favorite units and plans.

Mentor Sentences:
Go to Ideas By Jivey for more information!

Greek Myths:
I have both of Nicole Shelby's Units...and ignore the tootsies!

Figurative Language:

Reading Units:
Guided Reading Plans/Notes:
Sub Binder:
Got this here last year :)
Plus, a Meeting/Data Binder that goes everywhere and various other binders stashed all over!

Clearly, I have issues ;)

But for the most part-I know where everything is, and which binder to grab when I am looking for something specific (like, if I need a graphic organizer but am not sure which one I want to use, I look in my literacy binder or reading units)

Plus, they look oh so pretty!

Classroom Digs-In Progress

It's Teacher Week 2013!

Today is Classroom Digs Tuesday!

However, my classroom is a work in progress! I'm working in it today to move and tidy-so you'll see old pictures and work-in-progress pictures :)

Last year:
<--Shelves over there

Turn 180 to see chalkboard/library :)
This is the basic layout. I have more students this year, so I will have some more desks. Fortunately, the custodians moved the furniture in mostly the right place to save some heavy lifting :)

Some things that will remain the same (as soon as I put them up!)
I'll more than likely (95% sure) get rid of Math It Up and put the Jobs there...but Boggle and Learning tracker will stay. Above the Learning Tracker will be our Hopes and Dreams and Classroom Rules

Word Wall and Library will stay in the same place-though the pencil will move to the other side

Loved using this last year...a definite must!

CRAFT Board in the same place-VOICES has changed though
Reading Anchor charts will be in the same place-and Writing Anchor Charts are going where the old VOICES Board was...

SMART Board will be in the same place ;)

Right Now:

I'm working on organizing these shelves...you can see some progress! They will be b-e-a-you-tiful when I'm done ;)
So those need to be put in the right place...

Piles! As things came off the shelves, they were separated into piles-Free, Other Teachers, Old Curriculum, Trash. I'll be tackling the piles soon too!

I also have a SMART Board-behind my desk, opposite the whiteboard. I try to have whole group areas in front of the whiteboard and SMART Board-so I teach from both ends of my room!

Meet the Teacher

Hi!

It's Teacher Week 2013!

Today is Meet the Teacher Monday!

For those of you new, I'm Kaitlyn! :)

Some things about me...

~This will be my 7th year teaching...and my 13th year working with kids.

~This is my 3rd year in 4th grade (I finally got smart enough! ;) I've also taught Kindergarten, 1st and Readiness. (as well as 2nd and 6th for student teaching).

~ I LOVE to read!

I have over 500 books on that sucker...never mind the 7 bookcases I have of 'real' books!

~I'm also a hooker (not in the way you're thinking! :)

~ I spend a lot of time on my couch, reading and watching TV (and napping...I love sleep!)

~My kids think I'm funny and fairly ridiculous at times :)

Questions?
Just ask!

Monday Made It

Happy Monday!

I was finally inspired to get my made it on for school! (It only took most of the summer!)

First, I remade my clip chart. I didn't use one last year (my class was so good!), but this year I know I have some behavior 'challenges', so I wanted to be ahead of the game.

Of course, I had to remake in my theme-under the sea!

I tried to use ocean terms as well matching the colors on the chart to the animal colors :)

I also did binder covers, spines and basket labels for my math center binders.

Of course, everything coordinates!

I've started on a massive project-making my own lesson planner! So far it is going well-everything is laid out. I'm just waiting for a certain big sale to pick up some borders/clipart to finish it off!

I was also inspired by this pin to make my own writer's checklist...

Of course, I coordinated it ;)

I changed some things to fit within the traits and my expectations.

I love the way it turned out!

And a little hooking to keep me going!

Kaitlyn
