Choosing a Math Program

As we move toward full implementation of the Common Core, my district has started looking at new math programs for us to pilot (since our current program isn't made anymore, doesn't align anywhere and is basically awful)

I'm on the math committee to help choose a new program (SO excited!), and yesterday we had our first meeting.  We split into two groups, one group to focus on the goals of what we want (for our district and CC), and my group focused on creating a rubric for us to use to evaluate the program.

Our Curriculum Director has found a few programs for us to look at, but he is open to more suggestions if we here of some.

Our list so far is:

Go Math!
Math in Focus
Envisions
Math Stepping Stones
MyMath

Questions for you...

Have you used any of these? What do you think of it?
Any suggestions for other programs?

We're going to get a 1st and 4th grade set to evaluate for each of the programs, and then narrow it down to two for us to pilot.

  1. We use math in focus. It is strong in manipulatives and hands on lessons. I really love the approaches and strategies! My only complaint is that the reading level seems a little high for my beginning first graders and those still struggling with reading at this time of the year.

  2. I use envisions and it has things in their program that is not common core! We had to really read through each unit and pick and choose! I would not go with envisions.

  3. Not familiar with those - we use Investigations in our district. Also very hands on with many manipulatives and math games, but a little too light on practice in my opinion.

  4. Glad to see you aren't considering Investigations. It says its aligned with CCSS, but it isn't really. They were reaching on some topics. My district is adopting a supplemental curriculum called Math Solutions. It was developed with the help of Marilyn Burns. I don't know much about it, but it is supposed to be good at utilizing manipulatives.

  5. We have EnVisions. This is our 2nd year with it. Last year I taught kindergarten and this year 5th. I have seen it then with both grade levels. It's definitely more challenging than our previous program.

  6. I think our whole state-AL-adopted Go Math. I don't teach math so I can't really give you any of my insight, but from what I hear they did NOT like it at the beginning of the year because it teaches the kids SEVERAL different ways to do a problem. However, I hear lots of teachers say that they like it now after almost a year of implementation. It's big on word problems and small group/individual remediation on a daily basis.

    Good luck!
