Mentor Text Sunday: Thunder Boomer

Happy Sunday!

I'm off to go outleting with some of my college friends (who I haven't seen in almost a YEAR!) in Kittery.

Before I leave though (at an absurd hour for me on a Sunday ;), I wanted to link up with Collaboration Cutie's Mentor Text Linky.

I wanted to share with you one of my very favorite books for teaching writing: Thunder Boomer by Shutta Crum.
This story is about a summer storm that brings some much needed rain to a very hot day on the farm. It progresses from a simple storm to a hail storm-and even brings a surprise at the end.

I LOVE this book...it has such vivid and great word choice, as well as using a lot of onomatopoeia (why do I always spell that wrong?). This book banishes boring words to bring to life a vivid visualization of what a summer storm on the prairie looks and sounds likes.

The illustrations are no slouch either.

Don't you  just love those sound words written across the page?!!

It's also a great example for a personal narrative introduction, because it focuses in on a specific moment...it's a great seed story!! :)

You can use Thunder Boomer to teach visualization (image the drawings that could come from it!), prediction, inferencing, story structure, plot and more.

It's a truly versatile mentor text for Reading, Writing or just plain fun!

Have you entered?!!

  8. Thanks, Kaitlyn, for reviewing my book, THUNDER-BOOMER!! I don't know if you know, but it was an Amer. Library Assoc. and a Smithsonian Magazine notable book of the year. I LOVE that kids can use it as a mentor text.

Keep up the good work. (My latest book is due out July 2: DOZENS OF COUSINS. It is illustrated by David Catrow.) You can find more info about my boooks at: http://shutta.com.

Please feel free to post the link whenever you do a review. I love getting notes from folks, and they can contact me through my site.
